About Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin Real Estate
Recreational Opportunities are Boundless
Welcome to Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin!
Peninsula State Park, established in 1909, is a 3,776-acre state treasure on Wisconsin's Door County peninsula. Rocky bluffs ascend over 150 feet while deer graze contentedly in abandoned farm fields. Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula is also its most popular camping destination. The park's mission is to protect the natural and scenic resources of the park and to provide compatible forms of outdoor recreation and education.
Often praised by travel writers across the United States and Canada, Wisconsin's Door County peninsula is renowned for its natural beauty, curving shorelines and abundant and colorful foliage - all of which is most evident in Door County's five state parks. Along with over several dozen county and community parks and uniquely previous land preservation areas, Door County State Parks offer both visual and challenging
activities for nature enthusiasts of all ages, shapes and levels of expertise.
Peninsula State Park runs along Highway 42, near Fish Creek. Peninsula State Park offers Door County residents and guests breathtaking views of scenic Green Bay waters and 15 miles of groomed ski trails, 18 miles of snowmobile trails, 2 snowshoe and winter hiking trails totaling about 4 miles as well as family fun sledding on Hill 17.
The State of Wisconsin purchased this land for less than $20 an acre and in 1910 the state legislature officially established it as a state park. By 1914, the campground started gaining popularity and two 70 foot high observation towers were being built by the Civilian Conservation Corps at Svens Bluff as well as Eagle Bluff, one served as a tourist attraction the other as a lookout for forest fires. In 1921 Albert E. Doolittle, the parks manager, laid out a 9-hole golf course on the north-west corner of the park, over-looking Epriam Harbor; a memorial pole was built on the course in 1927; and in 1931 Potawatomi Chief Simon Kahquados was buried at the pole.
By 1934, flush toilets and running water were added. The winter warming house on Bluff Road was converted into the White Cedar Nature Center that same year. In 1982 Sunset Bike Trail was surfaced, computers began to be used for reservations, and an irrigation system was installed on the golf course (now 18 holes). In 1992 the first deer hunt was held on the park grounds. In 2001, tree thinning was started in Tennison Bay.
Recreational opportunities are boundless at Wisconsin's Peninsula State Park.. Park visitors can hike, bike, boat, golf and swim during spring, summer and fall. Winter offers cross country skiing, snoeshoeing, sledding and snowmobiling. Camping, nature programs, and sightseeing are offered year-round.
