Picturesque Communities
and Year-Round Relaxation
Door County’s Story
Throughout a dozen quaint harborside towns and the
pastoral interior of the county, quality art galleries
and studios reflect Door County, Wisconsin's deserved
international reputation for culture in the country. The
rich performing arts scene - from classical and jazz
music to renowned theater troupes - garners national
attention. The County is comprised of 19 municipalities,
bordered by the waters of Green Bay to the west and Lake
Michigan to the east.
The Door County, Wisconsin, peninsula enchants
visitors with over 250 miles of shoreline, 11 golf
courses, 5 State Parks, 17 County Parks, cherry and
apple orchards and a world class cultural community. The
narrow peninsula - only 75 miles long and 10 miles wide
- provides an astonishing variety of attractions. Door
County's unique draw to residents and visitors alike is
its perfect blend of natural beauty, culture and
hospitality. The peninsula's enthralling natural beauty
and charm invite you to kick off your shoes for a
peaceful stroll in the sand; to stargaze aboard a
sailboat with the wind as your guide, or arouse your
senses with abundant theater, music and art. Residents
typically plan their evenings, weekends or (for our
seasoned citizens) entire weeks visiting art galleries
or golf courses, picking a delicious bucket of fresh
cherries followed by a picnic on the beach or just
watching Mother Nature's daily show; every day's an
"off" day in lovely Door County, Wisconsin..
It's hardly surpirsing, then, that since the late
1800's the peninsula has been the destination of choice
for Midwest travelers. Today visitors come from
throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. One visit
and it is easy to see why MONEY Magazine selected
Door County as one of the top ten vacation destinations
in North America.
But, while many relish the Door County Peninsula as a
vacation destination, it’s also known for its thriving
business climate energized with companies whose products
are marketed locally and globally. A century of
shipbuilding serves as a solid foundation for a rapidly
growing collection of manufacturing and service
industries. A skilled workforce, brimming with ambition
and a strong work ethic, helps foster their success.
Workers here are resourceful and well educated. The
Sturgeon Bay campus of Northeast Wisconsin Technical
College and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus
provide ample opportunities for continuing education and
training.
Five public school districts and six private schools
serve Door County. Door County students consistently
score above average in state testing. In addition to the
excellent public and private schools the Northeast
Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) serves the area. The
local campus is located in Sturgeon Bay and classes are
available in multiple locations throughout Door County
and via the Internet. University of Wisconsin Green Bay
is located approximately 40 miles south of Door County.
Door County is home to the nation’s oldest
professional resident summer theater company, which
performs in an outdoor amphitheater in Fish Creek.
Picturesque communities, including Egg Harbor, Ephraim,
Fish Creek, Gills Rock and Sister Bay, offer historic
points of interest that reflect the area’s Scandinavian
and other original ethnic settlers. Museums showcase the
county’s rich maritime history, in particular the
Door County
Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay.
